Being self-employed web designers has a few benefits. One of our favorites is listening to music in the workplace. Sometimes it’s coming from FM radio. Other times it’s an online streaming service like Grooveshark. Either way, there are always tunes being kicked around our office, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
There has been much debate over whether music is helpful or harmful in the workplace. A lot of people will tell you that it can be a major distraction when trying to get some serious work done. We won’t argue with them (to each his own), but our doors always welcome good tunes. In fact, the sound of silence would actually be more off-putting to us than the sounds of shambolic punk rock or thumping electronic grooves. That’s just the way we roll.
Today is a throwback rock ‘n’ roll kind of day. 106.7 The D is providing us with some vintage tracks while our fingers are busy catering to our clients’ needs. The station appropriately bills itself as “classic rock for the cassette generation,” something we can definitely relate to. The Clash’s “Should I Stay Or Should I Go”, The Beastie Boys’ “Fight For Your Right” and Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life” have been among some of the choice cuts this afternoon.
As the day progresses, we’ll likely pipe in a few of our favorite artists from the Internet (check out Grooveshark if you haven’t already). Some of the usual suspects include Bad Religion, Sunny Day Real Estate, Modest Mouse, Sense Field, The Ramones, Shades of Heart, Pavement, The Coral, The Clash, Radiohead and The Strokes to name just a few. If we’re feeling extra studious, we may ditch the guitars for some more electronic offerings. There’s just something about an ambient groove that can getcha in the zone. Definitely good for a heavy duty day in the office.
If you have curious ears like us, we encourage you to check out some of the artists we’ve name-dropped. Hopefully they’ll become some of your favorites, too. Also, be sure to keep an eye on our blog for future musical meanderings. We’d love to keep ya posted!
